The Centro de Ciência Viva do Alviela is an interactive facility built on promoting science and technology revolving around three interactive exhibits that basically discuss the local Limestone Geological Plates, their origins and the local 175 million year old geological evolution. Some of the other topics that this institution present are the local weather influences on landscape and geological formations, the amazing secrets behind the one of a kind Alviela River Spring, the unique characteristics of the region’s cave bats as well as other astounding curiosities regarding local animal wildlife. Closely located by the important Alviela River Spring, in the heart of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park, CARSOSCÓPIO studies and promotes local fauna, flora and geomorphological phenomena of great beauty with the use of national state of the art technology. With an impressive annual visitation rate of 18000 visitors, Centro de Ciência Viva do Alviela was recently acknowledged with the Geoconservation Award in recognition of its important role in the promotion and preservation of the region’s natural heritage, not only because of the topics that are dealt with in the exhibits and during the guided visits but also as a result of the complementary activities that the Centre has to offer (experiments, games, interpretative walking trails, field trips) as well as a number of scientific events.
